HITH/HLLE
Parasitic
🟡 Moderate
Hole-in-the-Head Disease
🦠 Hexamita spp., poor nutrition, poor water quality
📋 Overview
HITH/HLLE presents as sunken pits on the head and lateral line - especially prominent in oscars, discus, and marine tangs. Causes are multifactorial: Hexamita flagellates, poor diet (low vitamin C), poor water quality, and heavy metal exposure (activated carbon linked in some studies).
🩺 Clinical Signs
Pits on head starting near nostrils, progression along lateral line, pale color, weight loss.
💊 Treatment
⚠️ No universally approved treatment is currently available. The information below covers supportive care and experimental approaches.
Metronidazole (25 mg/gallon in food or water). Improve water quality. Add vitamin C-enriched foods, garlic, high-quality frozen foods.
🛡️ Prevention
ℹ️ Prevention is the most effective strategy for managing this disease in aquaculture and aquarium settings.
Vitamin-enriched varied diet. Excellent water quality. Regular water changes. Avoid heavy activated carbon in tangs.
