Occurs mainly in the vicinity of or amongst marginal vegetation, only rarely over exposed sandy beaches away from rooted plants . Does not enter deeply into the marginal swamps and is rarely recorded at the swamp ends of inlets. A common gut content is a barely recognizable mush of plant debris, both algal & phanerogamic, with blue-green algae predominating. Also Diptera larvae, plant epidermis, diatoms & filamentous green algae .
