With a trophic level of 3.2, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Lays 300 eggs. Males and females have similar colors but the males are slightly larger. These fish make excellent parents . Eggs and larvae are tended and guarded by both parents .
Freshwater; benthopelagic; pH range: 5.2 - 7.5; dH range: 5 - 12. Tropical; 22°C - 26°C South America: Amazon River basin, in lower portions of tributaries of the Amazon River in Brazil.
