C-Start Escape Response
The reflexive C-shaped body bend that launches a fish away from a threat - one of the fastest neural responses in the animal kingdom.

📖 Overview
When a fish senses a sudden threat, its body curves into a tight "C" shape, then straightens explosively - propelling it perpendicular to the threat. The whole response takes 5-15 milliseconds. It is driven by a pair of enormous nerve cells called Mauthner cells that fire almost simultaneously, ensuring both sides of the body contract in coordinated escape. Damage a Mauthner cell and the fish loses one direction of escape entirely.
⚙️ How It Works
A single spike in one Mauthner cell activates all muscles on one side. The body bends into a C. Then rapid contraction of the opposite side straightens the body and drives it forward. The entire response occurs before conscious perception.
🐟 Examples Across Species
Universal in bony fish. Well-studied in zebrafish. Slower in slow-moving species like seahorses; extremely rapid in schooling fish like herring and mackerel.
✨ Fun Fact
The Mauthner cells are so large that individual axons can be surgically identified - one of the largest neurons in any vertebrate. This size enables the extreme response speed.
