Defensive Behavior
Fish Sleep
Rest states in fish - most species reduce activity, respond less to stimuli, and remain still or hover, though eyes stay open (no lids).
Trigger: Environment Function: Metabolic downregulation and neurological rest Observable in aquarium
📖 Overview
Fish sleep is defined behaviourally as a period of reduced responsiveness, immobility, and specific posture. Parrotfish spin protective mucus cocoons; wrasses bury in sand; groupers rest in crevices. Zebrafish sleep research has revealed conserved sleep neurobiology that maps onto human sleep - the same neurotransmitters and circuits regulate both.
👁️ How to Observe
Nocturnal aquarium fish (many catfish, plecos) become inactive by day, hovering or resting motionless. Diurnal species do the opposite at night.
✨ Fun Fact
Parrotfish secrete a mucous "sleeping bag" every night that masks their scent from predators - taking up to an hour to construct.
