📖 Overview

Some fish are functionally invisible. The reef stonefish is textured like coral rubble; the leaf fish looks and drifts like a dead leaf; countershaded pelagic fish have dark backs and pale bellies to disappear whether viewed from above or below. Camouflage is one of the oldest evolutionary strategies - as old as vision itself.

⚙️ How It Works

Static camouflage relies on fixed color and pattern. Adaptive camouflage (flounders) actively changes coloration via chromatophores - specialized skin cells that expand or contract pigment granules within minutes.
