📖 Overview
Almost every open-water fish - tuna, mackerel, herring, sardine, mahi-mahi - has a dark back and a pale belly. Seen from above, the dark back blends with deep water. Seen from below, the pale belly blends with bright surface light. Countershading is one of the oldest known camouflage strategies - described by Abbott Thayer in 1896 and applied to military ships and aircraft for decades since.
⚙️ How It Works
Chromatophores concentrate melanin dorsally and pale reflective iridophores ventrally. The transition is often sharp along the lateral line.
🐟 Examples Across Species
Universal in pelagic bony fish. Also seen in dolphins, penguins, and sharks (though many sharks show reverse patterns adapted to ambush).

Thayers Law of countershading was applied to WWII warships - dark grey topsides transitioning to pale hulls to reduce silhouette against sea and sky.
