📖 Overview

Pelvic fins are the paired fins on the underside of a fish - the equivalent of a tetrapods hind limbs. Their evolutionary trajectory mirrors that of pectoral fins: from simple stabilisers into diverse specialised tools. Modern fish position them in one of three ways - abdominal (behind the pectorals, ancestral), thoracic (below the pectorals, in perch-like fish), or jugular (in front of the pectorals, in cod). Position alone is a phylogenetic marker.

Supported by pelvic girdles that in most fish are not connected to the vertebral column. Composed of fin rays (soft rays and sometimes spines) with muscular attachments that permit spread, fold, and rotation. The gonopodium of male livebearers (guppies, mollies) is a modified anal fin, not pelvic - but pelvic fins in some seahorses lock onto substrate.

Primary role is pitch control and braking - hydrodynamic stability during forward motion and rapid stops. In gobies, pelvic fins fuse into a suction cup for clinging to rocks in current. In clingfish, they anchor the fish to intertidal surfaces. In male stickleback nests, pelvic spines advertise mate quality.

Present in the earliest jawed fish. Genetic studies show pelvic and pectoral fin development share overlapping regulatory pathways - the same Hox gene modules that pattern arms and legs in tetrapods.

Absent in eels, cusk-eels, and many deep-sea species. Fused into suction discs in gobies and clingfish. Elongated in gouramis (used as chemical sensory organs). Present as small spines in sculpins.
