📖 Overview

The adipose fin is one of the great mysteries of fish anatomy. Small, rayless, and seemingly redundant, it appears only in certain lineages - salmon, trout, char, whitefish, catfish, and characins. For decades biologists dismissed it as a vestigial structure. Recent research suggests it functions as a low-frequency mechanosensory organ, detecting subtle water flow that supplements the lateral line. Some hatcheries clip it as a marking practice - a practice increasingly under scrutiny.

A small, lobed, rayless fold of adipose tissue with a thin fibrous core and a rich nerve supply. Some species have secondary innervation suggesting sensory function.
