📖 Overview
Otoliths are among the most information-rich structures in biology. Each fish carries three pairs - the sagitta (largest, used in age determination), asteriscus, and lapillus. As the fish grows, the otolith accretes calcium carbonate in daily and seasonal rings, recording temperature, salinity, food availability, and life-history transitions. Scientists can read a single otolith to determine a fishs age, birthplace, migration route, and even the water it swam through decades ago.

Composed primarily of aragonite crystals within a proteinaceous matrix. Suspended in fluid-filled sacs (utricle, saccule, lagena) lined with sensory hair cells. Movement of the head or body causes the dense otolith to lag behind, deflecting hair cells and generating neural signals.
⚙️ Function
Balance and equilibrium: gravity acting on the otolith tells the fish which way is up. Angular acceleration detection: paired semicircular canals sense rotation. Hearing: sound-induced motion of the otolith relative to hair cells encodes acoustic information.
🔬 Scientific Significance
Otolith microchemistry (strontium/calcium ratios, stable isotope signatures) is a foundational tool in fisheries science. Otoliths track natal origins in salmon, migration patterns in tuna, and climate history over decades. A single otolith can outline an entire fish life story.

The oldest fish ever aged by otolith - a rougheye rockfish - was estimated at 205 years old. Its otolith recorded 205 annual rings.
