📖 Overview

Barbels are the fish equivalent of a cats whiskers - only they can also taste. Densely packed with taste buds and chemoreceptors, barbels let bottom-feeding fish detect food buried in mud where sight is useless. Catfish possess up to eight; carp have four; sturgeon dangle theirs like sensors in front of the mouth.

🐠 Variations Across Species

Catfish (Siluriformes) have four to eight barbels. Common carp have four short barbels. Sturgeon possess four ventral barbels in front of the mouth. Cod have a single chin barbel. Sharks and rays generally lack barbels.

✨ Fun Fact

A channel catfish has more taste buds than any other animal - over 175,000 - most of them on the barbels and skin. A catfish is essentially a swimming tongue.
