📖 Overview

Over 76% of deep-sea fish are bioluminescent - and most produce light through photophores. These specialised organs house either symbiotic bacteria or intrinsic luciferin-luciferase chemistry. Lanternfish scatter photophores across their bellies for counterillumination camouflage. Anglerfish concentrate them in a dangling lure. Flashlight fish flash bacterial photophores below their eyes like signal lamps.

🧬 Structure

A photophore typically includes a light-producing region (bacterial or biochemical), a reflector layer, a lens, and often colour filters. Muscular control lets the fish flash or dim the light.

Counterillumination (matching downwelling light to hide silhouette), prey luring (anglerfish, dragonfish), species recognition, mate attraction, communication, and startle-and-flee defensive flashing.
