📖 Overview

The fish skin is not passive armour. Its outermost layer is a living epidermis - unlike the dead outer layer of mammalian skin. Mucus cells continuously secrete slime containing antimicrobial peptides, immunoglobulins, and enzymes. This is the fishs first line of defence against pathogens. Handling fish with dry hands strips the slime coat and opens the door to infection - always wet your hands before touching a live fish.

Epidermis (living outer layer with mucus cells and club cells), dermis (containing scales, chromatophores, nerves, and blood vessels), and hypodermis (fat layer).
