Deep-Sea Offshore Fishing

Big-game fishing from offshore boats for pelagic gamefish like marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi, and swordfish.

Water: Saltwater Difficulty: Advanced Cost: $1,000+

📖 Overview

Deep-sea offshore fishing hunts the ocean's largest and fastest game fish. Charter boats or private sportfishers travel 20-100+ miles offshore to reach the Gulf Stream, canyons, and floating debris (weed lines, buoys, oil platforms) where pelagic fish concentrate. Trolling multi-line spreads, deep-drop rigging for swordfish, and pitching live bait to sighted fish are common approaches.

🎒 Gear Needed

Offshore sportfishing rods (30-130 lb class), Shimano/Penn/Accurate reels, IGFA-rated line, harnesses and fighting belts, wire and mono leaders, trolling lures, live baits, gaffs, boat with outriggers.

🐟 Target Species Notes

Blue marlin, black marlin, white marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, swordfish.
