📖 Overview
Lake Malawi is the cichlid capital of the world. Its clear waters host over 700 endemic species - more fish species than any lake on Earth. The rocky shore is populated by the mbuna group - vibrantly colored rock-dwellers that graze algae. Open water is home to the utaka pelagic species. Sandy bottoms host the peacock cichlids (Aulonocara) - stunning blue and yellow gems that dominate the aquarium hobby.
🗺️ Geography
Lake Malawi (Nyasa in Tanzania, Niassa in Mozambique) formed in the Great Rift Valley 1-2 million years ago. It is 580 km long, up to 75 km wide, and up to 706 m deep - one of the world's deepest lakes.
🐟 Notable Species
Mbuna group (yellow lab, red zebra, rusty cichlid, kenyi). Peacock cichlids (Aulonocara). Haplochromis species. Malawi eyebiter. Cyrtocara moorii (blue dolphin). Kampango catfish.
🌱 Endemic Species
Over 99% of Lake Malawis cichlids are endemic. The lake is a textbook example of adaptive radiation - all species descended from a single ancestor within the last 2 million years.
🛡️ Conservation Status
Overfishing, deforestation-driven sedimentation, and climate change threaten stocks. Chambo (Oreochromis) populations - the primary food fish - have declined dramatically.
