📖 Overview
Nearly all fish feed by suction to some degree. When a fish rapidly drops its lower jaw and expands its mouth cavity, it creates a low-pressure zone that draws water - and any prey in it - into the mouth. The critical variable is speed: the faster the expansion, the stronger the pressure differential, the further away prey can be sucked in. Largemouth bass and grouper are champion suction feeders; frogfish combine suction with ambush for the fastest strikes in nature.
⚙️ How It Works
Rapid opening of the jaw and hyoid arch expands the buccal (mouth) cavity. Pressure drops sharply. Water rushes in from outside, carrying prey with it. Opercular chambers expand simultaneously to accept the incoming water.

A largemouth bass strike generates enough suction to pull prey from over a body-length away - the prey never moves toward the bass; the water carries it in.
