Occur in swamps and mud-bottomed and heavily vegetated ponds, lakes and sloughs . Young feed primarily on small crustaceans (ostracods, amphipods, etc.), midge larvae, and small dragonfly nymphs; adults' diet is similar but also contain snails, aquatic hemipterans and terrestrial insects .
