📖 Overview
Gill rakers are the gate-keepers of the gill chamber. Between them and the gill filaments, food particles are trapped, hard debris is blocked, and the delicate respiratory tissue is protected. Their number and length are diagnostic characters used in fish identification. Filter feeders (whale sharks, basking sharks, anchovies, menhaden) have dense, elongated rakers that strain plankton from massive volumes of water. Predators have short, widely-spaced rakers.
