📖 Overview

Gautama thryssa (Thryssa gautamiensis) is a ray-finned fish of the family Engraulidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in pelagic environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 21.5 cm. It occurs at depths between 0 and 50 metres. With a trophic level of 3.4, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms. It is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List.

🐟 Physical Description

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 34 - 37. Belly with 25 to 27 (rarely 24) keeled scutes from isthmus to anus. Tip of snout at about level of upper rim of eye. Maxilla moderate, projecting slightly beyond edge of gill cover; first supra-maxilla minute, oval; jaw teeth slightly enlarged compared with other species. A dark blotch behind upper part of gill opening; a pair of dark lines on back, from nape to caudal fin.: elongated; Cross section: compressed.
