📖 Overview

The rays and spines of a fish fin are as revealing as fingerprints. Spines are stiff, unpaired, unsegmented, and often sharp - used defensively or (in venomous species) as weapon delivery. Soft rays are flexible, paired, segmented, and often branched at the tip. The formula "D III, 9" means three dorsal spines followed by nine soft rays - a shorthand used by ichthyologists to distinguish thousands of species.
