📖 Overview
Broadcast spawning is the ancient way. Rather than pair-bond, build a nest, or care for offspring, broadcast spawners simply release millions of gametes into the water and rely on statistics. Fertilisation happens by chance in the water column; the vast majority of eggs are eaten within days; but the sheer numbers ensure population continuity. The ocean sunfish releases 300 million eggs per spawn - the highest single-clutch fecundity of any vertebrate.
⚙️ How It Works
Coordinated release triggered by temperature, day length, moon phase, or lunar tides. Eggs and sperm mix in the water; fertilised eggs float or sink depending on species. No parental care.
🧭 Evolutionary Advantage
Enormous offspring numbers overwhelm predators via the dilution effect. Wide dispersal spreads risk. Low parental investment allows spawners to reproduce many times.

✨ Fun Fact
The great sunfish (Mola mola) female can weigh over 2,000 kg - most of which is ovaries. She converts perhaps 5% of her body mass into a single spawning event.
