📖 Overview
Many reef fish do not have a fixed sex. Clownfish start male; the dominant female of a group is the largest fish, and if she dies, the largest male becomes female. Wrasse do the opposite - starting female and shifting to male when they reach dominant size. This is protandry (male → female) or protogyny (female → male), and it optimizes reproduction: small females produce more eggs than small males; large males monopolize breeding.
⚙️ How It Works
Behavioral cues (loss of dominant, ratio of sexes) trigger hormonal cascades. Within days to weeks, gonads restructure - either testis → ovary or vice versa. In some species the transformation is complete within 3 weeks.

Clownfish (Amphiprion) - protandrous. Wrasses (Labridae) - protogynous. Parrotfish (Scaridae) - protogynous with striking color change. Grouper species - protogynous. Bandit angelfish - bidirectional.
