🌕
Reproductive Behavior
Spawning Aggregation
Predictable seasonal gatherings of thousands to millions of fish for mass reproductive events - highly vulnerable to fisheries targeting.
Trigger: Seasonal Function: Massive reproductive synchrony at predictable sites
📖 Overview
Nassau grouper, cubera snapper, and dozens of other species gather at specific reef promontories on specific moon phases each year to spawn. A single site may host tens of thousands of fish during a two-day window. Once located, these aggregations are catastrophically vulnerable - a single fishing season can collapse decades of population.
🐟 Examples Across Species
Nassau grouper (Epinephelus striatus), cubera snapper (Lutjanus cyanopterus), red hind (Epinephelus guttatus), coral trout aggregations on the GBR.
✨ Fun Fact
The Nassau grouper aggregations at Little Cayman were reduced from over 100,000 fish in the 1970s to fewer than 3,000 by the early 2000s - a collapse now being reversed under strict spawning-site protection.
