Sight Fishing
Visually locating specific fish and casting to them individually - the most demanding and rewarding form of angling.
Water: Both
Difficulty: Advanced
📖 Overview
Sight fishing is hunting - not fishing blind. In clear shallow water (flats, spring-fed streams, some reefs), the angler spots individual fish and casts to them. Bonefish, permit, tarpon on the flats; trout in clear streams; carp in shallow bays; redfish tailing in seagrass. The reward is direct - you see the fish take (or refuse) your offering.
🎒 Gear Needed
Polarised sunglasses (essential - amber for shallow water, grey for bright light), long-billed hat, quiet boat or wading gear, appropriate rod/line for target species.
💡 Pro Tips
1) Move slowly - vibration alerts fish long before sight does. 2) Position sun behind you. 3) Cast beyond the fish, then intercept - never cast on top. 4) Use unweighted or lightly weighted flies/lures for silent presentation.
