Pond - Freshwater
Pond Culture
Fish farming in earthen ponds - the oldest and still most common aquaculture method worldwide, producing the majority of global freshwater fish.
Sustainability: ★★★☆☆ Scale: Any
Setup: $5,000+ FCR: 1.6
📖 Overview
Pond culture is the workhorse of global aquaculture. In China alone, hundreds of thousands of hectares of ponds produce billions of kilograms of carp, tilapia, catfish, and shrimp annually. Ponds harness natural biological productivity - phytoplankton photosynthesis feeds zooplankton feeds fish, supplemented by feed. Polyculture (multiple species) maximizes production.
🐟 Species Commonly Farmed
Chinese and Indian carps, tilapia, catfish, freshwater shrimp, rohu, catla.
✅ Advantages
Low capital cost. Simple technology. Uses natural biological cycles. Suitable for small farmers. Long history of local knowledge.
❌ Disadvantages
Susceptible to weather (rain, drought, disease outbreaks). Water quality can degrade. Requires arable land. Escapes can affect wild populations.
