📖 Overview
The Weberian apparatus is the underwater equivalent of the mammalian middle ear ossicles. It transmits vibrations from the swim bladder (which acts as an amplifier) directly to the inner ear, giving catfish, carp, minnows, and other ostariophysans the best hearing in the fish world - up to 13 kHz, versus 1-2 kHz for most other fish.
🐠 Variations Across Species
Present only in Ostariophysi - the largest fish superorder including catfish, carps, minnows, characins, and electric eels. Absent in perches, sharks, salmonids.
✨ Fun Fact
A goldfish can be trained to recognize classical music with sufficient accuracy to distinguish Bach from Stravinsky - thanks to Weberian ossicles.
