Fish of the Nile River

The Nile supported human civilization for over 5,000 years. Its annual flood cycles enabled agriculture in Egypt and Sudan; its fisheries fed empires. Nile perch (Lates niloticus) reached over 200 kg in ancient times - depicted in tomb art. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is now the second-most farmed fish worldwide, descended from these ancient stocks. The Aswan High Dam (1970) transformed the rivers ecology by ending seasonal floods.
