River - Freshwater

Fish of the Danube River

Europes second-longest river, flowing 2,850 km through 10 countries - historically home to beluga sturgeon and vital pike-perch, catfish, and carp fisheries.

Continent: Europe Area: 801,463 km² Climate: Temperate

📖 Overview

The Danube crosses more countries than any other river. Beluga sturgeon migrating up its length to spawn were the source of the finest caviar in history; now, populations survive only through strict protection. Dams (Iron Gate I and II) blocked historic spawning migrations. The Danube Delta - one of the largest wetlands in Europe - remains a critical spawning ground.

🐟 Notable Species

Beluga sturgeon (critically endangered), starlet sturgeon, huchen (Danube salmon), zander (pike-perch), Wels catfish (up to 3 m).
