🚨 Invasive Species Impact

Status
Established
Ecological Impact
Severe
Origin
Nile River basin
How Introduced
intentional stocking (commercial fishery development)
First Recorded
1954
Invaded Regions
Lake Victoria (introduced 1954)
Ecological Impacts
  • mass extinction of native haplochromine cichlids (200+ species lost)
  • simplified food web
  • altered lake ecology
Economic Impacts
  • created major export fishery
  • disrupted subsistence fisheries dependent on native cichlids
Affected Native Species
500+ Lake Victoria endemic cichlids (majority extinct or critically endangered)
Control Methods

Established commercial fishery is now economic mainstay - eradication impossible.

Management Status

Sustainable fisheries management focus; some cichlid refuge areas.

Eradication Outcome

Not attempted - now central to lake economy.
