Mesopelagic Zone
Mesopelagic Zone
The twilight zone - dim, cold, and one of the largest habitats on Earth, home to bioluminescent hunters and vast schools of lanternfish.
Depth: 200-1,000m Light: Twilight Pressure: 20-100 atm Temp: 4-15
📖 Overview
Between 200 and 1000 meters lies the twilight zone. Sunlight persists only faintly, insufficient for photosynthesis. Bioluminescence lights this world. Lanternfish - the most abundant vertebrates on Earth by numbers - live here. They migrate vertically nightly, following zooplankton to the surface and back, in the largest daily migration on the planet.
🌿 Ecology
Lanternfish, hatchetfish, dragonfish, giant squid. Vertical migrators create a nightly food web that reaches the surface and back.
🧬 Adaptations Required
Enormous eyes (or reduced eyes with photophore camouflage). Bioluminescence for hunting, mating, defense. Slow metabolism. Weak bones and muscles (low pressure differential across ascent).
