Occurs on open hard-bottom substrates with algae and sparse coral growth, usually in strong current zones. Juveniles and females in small groups, sometimes with several males of which largest is dominating .
Dorsal spines (total): 11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 9. Juveniles and females similar to several other species and identification depends on the presence of a male that has a long dorsal filament and red anal fin, latter may look black in natural light .: fusiform / normal.
