📖 Overview
Ten species of anemonefish share the tropical Indo-Pacific with ten species of host anemones. Each fish species prefers specific anemone species; each pairing is a small ecological miracle. The clownfish is coated in a specialised mucus that inhibits the anemones nematocyst discharge - and the fish appears to slowly acclimate to a new anemone over hours or days by carefully brushing against it.
⚙️ How It Works
Fish mucus contains high glycoprotein levels that don't trigger anemone nematocyst discharge. Some evidence suggests the mucus acquires anemone-specific chemistry through gradual exposure.

Ocellaris clownfish + magnificent anemone. Pink skunk clownfish + carpet anemone. Tomato clownfish + bubble tip anemone. Anemonefish species outside this partnership do not survive on reefs.
👁️ How to Observe
In marine aquariums, clownfish will often "host" in surrogate objects (coral, ornaments) if no anemone is available - suggesting the association is at least partly innate.

A tomato clownfish carefully touching a new host anemone with fin tips - repeatedly, over hours - acquires the chemical signature that lets it eventually rest safely among the tentacles.
