Year class strength refers to the number of juvenile fish that survive through the critical early life period to join the adult population from a given cohort (annual spawning event). It is the most variable parameter in fish population dynamics — varying by 1–2 orders of magnitude between years for the same species in the same location. Year class strength is determined primarily during the larval and early juvenile stage by: food availability (match-mismatch with zooplankton peak), predation, transport to settlement habitat, and environmental conditions. A single strong year class can dominate the fishery for the fish's entire lifespan.
💡 Examples & Context
The 1999 North Sea herring year class was exceptionally strong — 10–100× larger than average — and continued to be detected in the population 12 years later, accounting for a disproportionate fraction of the spawning stock.
