Carrying capacity (K) is a central concept in population ecology — the maximum number of individuals of a species that an environment can sustain over the long term without degrading its resource base. It is reached when the birth rate equals the death rate (dN/dt = 0 in the logistic growth model). In fisheries, understanding the carrying capacity of a fish stock is essential for determining sustainable harvest rates. It varies with environmental conditions (food availability, temperature, habitat quality) and can be reduced by degradation of the ecosystem.
