Benthic organisms live on or within the bed (substrate) of a body of water. Strictly benthic fish are in direct contact with the substrate — they rest on it, burrow in it, or are attached to it. Examples include flatfishes (buried in sand), gobies (sitting on rocks), and skates (lying on muddy seabeds). This contrasts with demersal fish, which swim just above the bottom without direct contact. In practice the terms are often used interchangeably.
