Fish of the Baltic Sea

The Baltic is a peculiar sea - saline in the west, nearly fresh in the east, cold year-round, and largely landlocked. Only certain fish thrive here: cod, herring, sprat, and the endemic Baltic salmon. Chronic hypoxia in deep basins - some of the worlds worst - is worsening. Nutrient loading from surrounding agriculture continues to degrade the ecosystem.
