Adults inhabit outer slope of reef, seagrass bed, and small coral heads . They are secretive species occurring on coral reefs where it hides among soft corals and benthic algae . They feed on benthic invertebrates. Monogamous and always in home-ranging pairs, that is they do not defend an exclusive territory . Population from Western Indian Ocean and Red Sea may be different species from fishes from the Pacific; genetic studies are needed .
