📖 Overview
Adults inhabit various types of bottoms, especially seagrass beds and sand down to 500 m depth, but more common between 40 and 100 m. The young are found nearer to the shore. Omnivorous, but prefer worms, mollusks and small crustaceans . Important food fish. Minimum depth reported taken from Ref. 57673.

Dorsal spines (total): 12 - 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 12; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 9 - 10. Body tall without stripes but with a black spot at the pectoral fin base .: fusiform / normal.

🥚 Reproduction
Most individuals are first males, then become females at a size of about 24 to 30 cm or 17 to 29 cm TL; 2 to 7 years (eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea) . Also Ref. 28504.

Marine; benthopelagic; oceanodromous ; depth range 0 - 500 m , usually 40 - 100 m . Subtropical; 58°N - 12°N, 26°W - 36°E recorded occasionally off Denmark.
