📖 Overview
Indian snapper (Lutjanus madras), first described by Valenciennes, 1831 is a medium-sized fish in the family Lutjanidae (order Perciformes). Adults typically reach 32.80 cm in maximum length. It inhabits marine coastal and open-ocean environments. Recorded depth range: 5 to 80 metres. It occurs in Tropical waters. Diet is predominantly piscivorous, targeting other fish and larger prey. On the IUCN Red List, it is classified as Least Concern.The species is important as a food fish and considered a sustainable seafood option under current management. As a member of the Lutjanidae, it shares life-history and morphological traits with its relatives in the group.

Dorsal spines (total): 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 9. This species is distinguished by the following characters: no scales on the preopercular flange; scales on the cheek 7-8 rows; with a rounded posterior nostril; predorsal scales extending to about the level of the posterior edge of the orbit; with a prominent mid-lateral yellow stripe, from 1.5 to 3 scale rows wide .Cross section: compressed.
