Aquarium Hobby History
From Victorian parlour marvel to modern reef technology - the 175-year evolution of the ornamental aquarium.
Era: Modern Region: Global Year: 1850
📖 Overview
The first proper aquariums appeared in 1850s London. Philip Henry Gosse coined the word "aquarium" and popularised keeping marine invertebrates at home. The Victorian aquarium craze produced elaborate wrought-iron tanks in wealthy parlors. Freshwater tropicals arrived with imports from the Amazon in the early 1900s. Post-WWII developments - stainless steel tanks, then silicone glass tanks, air pumps, and eventually LEDs and reef technology - progressively transformed a niche hobby into a global industry worth billions.
