Basque Cod Fisheries
The 1,000-year Basque tradition of cod fishing across the Atlantic - possibly reaching Newfoundland centuries before Cabot.
Era: Medieval Region: Basque Country Year: 1000
📖 Overview
Basque fishermen may have been catching cod off Newfoundland as early as the 11th century - hundreds of years before Cabot officially "discovered" the fishery in 1497. The Basques kept their fishing grounds secret to preserve competitive advantage. Basque cuisine still features hundreds of salt-cod dishes.
