Fish are not silent. Croakers and drums beat sonic muscles against their swim bladders. Catfish rub pectoral spines against sockets to produce squeaks. Damselfish make chirps during territorial disputes. In some fish, the sounds are so distinct they can be used for species identification - like listening to birdsong.
