📖 Overview

In many cichlids, sea catfish, cardinalfish, and bettas, one parent picks up fertilized eggs and holds them in the buccal cavity through incubation. The parent cannot feed during this period - often 2-4 weeks - losing significant body mass but achieving survival rates of 60-90% versus the 1-5% typical of open-water spawners.

⚙️ How It Works

The parent gently rotates eggs by mouth movements to ensure oxygenation. Water is pumped through the buccal cavity even as the mouth remains closed. In most species the female broods; in some catfish and cardinalfish it is the male; in yellowhead jawfish, both parents alternate.

🧭 Evolutionary Advantage

Predation on eggs and fry is the primary mortality source for most fish. Mouthbrooding cuts this to near zero. The tradeoff is fewer offspring per clutch (dozens rather than thousands) and heavy parental cost.

🐟 Examples Across Species

Many African cichlids (Malawi mbuna, Tanganyika Tropheus) are female mouthbrooders. Sea catfish (Ariidae) are paternal mouthbrooders. Cardinalfish (Apogonidae) are paternal. Yellowhead jawfish alternate parents. Some cichlids (Discus, Angelfish) are not mouthbrooders but use body slime as fry food.

A female Malawi cichlid can hold 40 fry in her mouth for three weeks without eating - losing up to 30% of her body weight before releasing them.
