Parental Behavior
Egg Guarding
Physical defence of eggs against predators - one of the most common parental strategies across freshwater fish.
Trigger: Predator Function: Prevents egg predation during the vulnerable incubation phase Observable in aquarium
📖 Overview
Egg guarding is the most widespread form of fish parental care. Cichlids, sunfish, sticklebacks, catfish - all invest significant energy patrolling eggs, chasing off predators, and fanning fresh oxygenated water across the clutch. In many species, the guarding parent stops feeding entirely for the duration.
👁️ How to Observe
Male cichlids guarding eggs will attack anything that comes near, including maintenance tools and the aquarist\'s hand.
✨ Fun Fact
A male stickleback can lose 20-30% of body weight guarding eggs - refusing to feed while continuously fanning the nest with his fins.
