Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)

Land-based fish farming with continuous water recirculation, filtration, and treatment - the most controllable and biosecure aquaculture method.

Sustainability: ★★★★☆ Scale: Industrial Setup: $500,000+ FCR: 1.1

📖 Overview

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems represent the technological frontier of fish farming. Fish are raised indoors in tanks; water is continuously filtered, oxygenated, temperature-controlled, and returned. RAS enables year-round production of any species anywhere - Atlantic salmon in the desert, tilapia in the Arctic. High capital costs but low water use, minimal environmental discharge, and full biosecurity.

⚙️ How It Works

Water flows from culture tanks through mechanical filtration (drum filters), biofiltration (nitrification), UV/ozone sterilization, temperature control, oxygenation, and back to tanks. Only 1-10% water exchange daily. Automated feeding and monitoring.

🐟 Species Commonly Farmed

Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, tilapia, striped bass, sturgeon (for caviar), coral fragments for reef restoration.

Advantages

Minimal environmental impact (no effluent discharge). Location-independent production. Year-round harvest. Full biosecurity - no disease introduction/escape. Precise growth control. Low water use (90-99% recycled).

Disadvantages

Very high capital cost. High energy demand. Requires skilled operators. Any system failure risks catastrophic loss. Ongoing operational complexity.
