Oxygen Debt & Recovery
The oxygen deficit built up during burst activity that must be repaid during recovery - a physiological concept central to catch-and-release survival.
Unit: time Code: O2_DEBT
📖 Overview
A fish sprinting from a predator or fighting a hook builds up lactic acid faster than oxygen can process. During recovery it swims with mouth open and gills flared, gulping oxygen to metabolise the accumulated lactate. Interrupted recovery (from another disturbance or premature release) leaves the fish severely stressed. This is why "revive before release" - moving a caught fish head-first through water until it swims off strongly - matters so much.
❓ Why It Matters
Understanding oxygen debt physiology is why proper catch-and-release technique saves lives.
