Found on sandy and muddy bottoms of coastal waters, estuaries and mangroves, and occasionally in the surf . Young aggregate near river mouths . Common around islands . Nocturnal feeder, taking crustaceans, chaetognaths, plant material, and polychaetes . May have a prolonged spawning season .
