📖 Overview

Offshore cardinalfish (Ostorhinchus bryx) is a ray-finned fish of the family Apogonidae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in reef-associated environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 5.2 cm. It occurs at depths between 14 and 155 metres. With a trophic level of 3.4, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms. It is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.

Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 24. This species is distinguished by 6 spines in first dorsal fin; 3 dark stripes on the upper half of head and body, the broadest and midlateral, reaching end of caudal fin, 2 narrow stripes reaching to base of second dorsal fin, the lower stripe reaching caudal fin base; no dark stripes in second dorsal or anal fins; gill rakers and rudiments 23-26; pectoral rays 14-15; blackish stomach and intestine, peritoneum silvery with many melanophores .: elongated; Cross section: oval.
