Smallhead moray cod

📖 Overview

Smallhead moray cod (Notomuraenobathys microcephalus) is a ray-finned fish of the family Muraenolepididae. It inhabits marine (saltwater) waters in deep-water environments. This species can reach a maximum total length of 30 cm. It occurs at depths between 1976 and 3040 metres. With a trophic level of 3.4, it is a low-level carnivore, feeding on invertebrates and small organisms.

The body is highly elongated, slender, depth less than 13% SL; 83-85 vertebrae; no anal lateral line; dorsal lateral line highly reduced and represented only by 1-3 tubular scales; infraorbital canal with 9 pores; preopercular-mandibular canal with 10 pores (7 in its mandibular branch, 3 in the preopercular branch) .: elongated; Cross section: oval.

🌍 Habitat & Distribution

Marine; bathypelagic; depth range 1976 - 3040 m. Deep-water; 52°S - 68°S, 60°W - 60°E South Georgia, South Sandwich, South Orkney, and South Shetland islands), northern part of Antarctic Peninsula, and Enderby coast.
