Inhabit continental slopes , forming large shoals over rough ground near pinnacles and canyons . Juveniles are pelagic and tend to be dispersed over smooth grounds . Feed on salps, fish, crustaceans and squid . Eggs float near the surface and larvae also inhabit surface waters .
